  Backset The length from center edge of door to center of the
facebore, 2 3/8" or 2 3/4" in most cases....more
 
  Dead Latch Dual plunger latch used for exterior keyed entry function locksets. Frequently referred to as "the thingy".
 
  Deadbolt Latch Bolt latch used for deadbolt function locksets. Frequently referred to as "the thingy".
 
 

Double Cylinder

Lockset which is keyed on both sides, requiring a key to lock or unlock from either side. Most often a deadbolt but can be a entry knob.
 
  Drive-in Latch Latch with no mortised faceplate, installed by driving latch into edge bore. Frequently referred to as "the thingy".
 
  Edge Bore Hole drilled in door edge to to mount latch.
 
  Entry Function Keyed lockset used for exterior entry doors. Can be knob, lever, deadbolt or handleset.
 
  Face Bore Hole drilled through door face to to mount locksets.
 
  Grade I Security Commercial quality lock designed for heavy use in commercial and public buildings.
     
  Grade II Security Best residential quality lock, designed and built to offer excellent security and durability for most residential applications and some light commercial applications. Grade 2 certification is highly recommended for acceptable home security.
     
  Grade III Security Minimal acceptable quality for residential door locks.

The grade of locksets is based on a series of tests done by ANSI (American National Standards Institute). These tests determine the durability and level of security protection of the lock.

 
  Half-Dummy Function Surface mounted knob or lever for doors where only a pull is required. No operation.
 
  Interconnected Lockset system where inside lever or knob simultaneously retracts latch and deadbolt for quick emergency exit. Required by some local building codes in specific applications.
 
  Keyed Alike Where two or more locksets are keyed to use the same key.
 
  Passage Function Interior lockset used for closet, hallway and bedroom doors, both sides are always free to turn. Can be knob or lever.
 
  Patio Function Both sides locked or unlocked by push/pull button inside. Same as Privacy function with no exterior emergency unlock feature. Used on exterior doors which normally don't require key entry (patios, balconies, decks, etc.)
 
  Plain Latch Single plunger latch used for interior passage and privacy function locksets. Frequently referred to as "the thingy".
 
  Privacy Function Interior lockset used for bathroom and bedroom doors where privacy is desired. Both sides locked or unlocked by turn or push button inside. Outside knob can be unlocked by emergency key provided with new lockset.
 
  Rose Decorative trim around knob or lever covering face bore. Also referred to as Rosette and Escutcheon.
 
  Single Cylinder Lockset which is keyed on one side, requiring a key to lock or unlock from exterior and usually a thumbturn or pushbutton to unlock from interior.
 
  Split Finish Interior and exterior finishes of are different. Used in coordinating different decor in adjoining rooms.
 
  Strike Mounts in door jamb, receives latch to secure door.
